Cable theft: Court releases 2 suspects after 14 months awaiting trial

Two suspects allegedly nabbed with stolen NITEL cables have been discharged from the Ikoyi prisons after spending 14 months awaiting trial.

The duo – Francis Agbaka and Thomas Alausa – were released from the prison after their case was struck out at the Ikoyi Prisons magistrate court yesterday for lack of diligent prosecution.

The case, which had suffered several adjournments at the Igbosere magistrate court, Lagos, was subsequently transferred to the Ikoyi Prisons magistrate court following the directive of the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Opeyemi Oke, that all such matters should henceforth be handled at the magistrate court located within the prison’s immediate environment.

The two men were arrested on September 17, 2017, at MacDonald Street, Ikoyi, Lagos, for allegedly being in unlawful possession of some quantities of NITEL cables suspected to have been stolen. The charge sheet stated that when they were interrogated, they could not give a satisfactory account of how they came about it.

They were also said to have been arrested with two shovels suspected to have been used for cutting and removing the NITEL cables.
