Driver killed, 3 injured as tanker crashes in Abaji

A middle-aged tanker driver was trapped to death, while three others sustained injuries when the tanker crashed near a bridge in Abaji on the Abuja-Lokoja Road.

A witness said the accident happened at 12:30am on Saturday when the driver of the Mercedes Benz tanker with registration number JJJ 198 XB lost control and crashed into a ditch.

He said he suspected the driver fell asleep, adding that men of the fire service were alerted and they came to assist the rescue team of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to remove the driver.

He said the injured were taken to the hospital and the corpse was deposited in the mortuary.

When contacted, the Abaji Unit Commander of the FRSC, ACC Olasupo Esuruoso, confirmed the incident, which he attributed to over speeding and fatigue.

In a similar situation, four persons were injured in another accident which occurred last Thursday evening at Piri Junction on the Abuja-Lokoja Road.

A witness said the accident, which involved a Golf car with registration number EJG 52 AA and a DAF truck without plate number, happened around 06:00pm.

He said the driver of the Golf overtook another a vehicle and in the process hit the moving truck.

When contacted, the Yangoji Unit Commander of the FRSC, ACC Samgbaza Joseph, confirmed the accident, saying the victims were taken to the Kwali General Hospital.
