Five Missing, Three Dead, Twelve Rescued As Lagos Boat Capsized

Divers have recovered three bodies out of the eight persons that were declared missing yesterday after a 20-seater passenger boat capsized yesterday evening in Lagos.

Daily Trust learnt that a combined team of local divers and the Lagos State Water Authority (LASWA) fished out the corpses of the persons from the murky waters at the Coconut area of the Tin Can Island port.

The passenger boat was conveying passengers from Liverpool in Apapa to Ojo off the Mile 2-Badagry expressway yesterday night when it capsized about 8.30pm. Twelve people were understood to have been rescued, while rescuers were still combing the waters yesterday afternoon in search of five missing persons.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Adesina Tiamiyu, said that the corpses of two men and a woman were recovered.

Tiamiyu said that two of the bodies had been handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) to be deposited at the morgue, while that of the woman, identified as an Alhaja, was handed over to her family after proper documentation from Marine police officers.

He said that the search-and-rescue operation to recover the missing persons was suspended on Wednesday midnight but had since resumed yesterday.
