2019 Met Gala: Fans create hilarious memes on social media

A-list stars went overboard with outrageous costumes at the Met Gala on Monday night in an effort to embrace the night's 'camp' theme and fans had a field day on social media creating some hilarious memes.

Serena Williams' gown was likened to a cheese and ham omelette while Celine Dion's dress was compared to a pasta drying rack and her headpiece was likened to a dandelion.
Charli XCX's yellow frilly gown was compared to a loofah and Zendaya arrived dressed as Cinderella in a Tommy Hilfiger gown with users quick to cheekily re-cast the Disney classic with other guests from the New York extravaganza in hilarious memes.

Some couldn't help but compare Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner to Cinderella's ugly stepsisters due to their showgirl gowns from Versace.
Many fans also compared the sisters' orange and blue gowns to the ugly stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella from Cinderella.

Kendall, 23, took it all in stride, taking to her Instagram story by sharing a photo of the stepsisters from the original Disney animated movie.
That was directly followed by a snap of her and Kylie together at the annual bash, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Other fans noticed similarities in Kendall and Kylie's colour scheme, comparing them to Lucy Punch's Hattie and Jennifer Higham's Olive from the 2004 fantasy comedy Ella Enchanted.
Another compared their Versace gowns to the colourful tuxedos worn by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels' characters in the 1995 comedy classic Dumb and Dumber.

Another fan took things even further, comparing Cardi B in her red Thom Browne dress with massive train/quilt to Cinderella's evil stepmother, and Lady Gaga in her neon pink Brandon Maxwell gown to the Fairy Godmother.
Other fans compared their look to the 2004 comedy White Chicks.

Zendaya, who many thoughts were the 'queen' of the Met Gala last year, seemed determined to hold onto that unofficial title, with an elaborate Tommy Hilfiger gown that had a bit of magic as well.

Accompanied by her stylist Law Roach, portraying the Fairy Godmother, whenever he waved his 'magic wand,' the actress' dress lit up.
True to form, Zendaya even lost one of her slippers, when heading up the staircase to go into the Met Gala, which E! called 'the best part of the red carpet so far.'

Katy Perry made headlines by wearing a massive chandelier on her head and around her waist, which leads to another Disney comparison.

Fans on social media compared Perry to the Beauty and the Beast character Lumiere, a sentient candlestick, who was voiced by Jerry Orbach in the 1991 animated film and played by Ewan McGregor in the 2017 live-action remake.
There were a number of other stars who went in character, with Janelle Monae as a version of the Mad Hatter, inspired by artists like Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, in a Christian Siriano gown.

Country music superstar Kacey Musgraves made her Met Gala debut in a Barbie-inspired outfit by Jeremy Scott for Moschino.

Halsey rocked a red Atelier Prabal Gurung dress that gave off some serious Wonder Woman vibes.
Lizzo also rocked an outfit that fans noticed was inspired by a look Shirley MacLaine showcased in the 1964 film What a Way to Go.

Glee and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy also showed up in a Liberace-inspired look at the Met Gala.
