Did you know Nelson Mandela and these celebrities were adopted?

Nelson Mandela

After his father died when Mandela was nine years old, the young boy’s life changed drastically. Adopted by Chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo, the acting regent of the Thembu people, Mandela moved from the tiny village of Qunu, where his family had subsisted off beans and maize, to the royal residence in Thembuland.

Here, the eventual President of South Africa and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize studied English, geography, and took a keen interest in African history, eventually going on to study law and become involved with politics and human rights.

Here are the more celebrities who were adopted.

Eric Clapton

The famous guitarist and singer was raised by his maternal grandparents, thinking for many years his birth mother was actually his sister.

Clapton’s mother was 16 years old when she became pregnant by a Canadian soldier stationed in England during the Second World War. Though his grandparents never legally adopted him, they remained his guardians until 1963.

Jack Nicholson

Nicholson was adopted by his maternal grandmother when he was an infant, leading him to believe his birth mother was his sister.

It wasn’t until after both were deceased, when Nicholson was 37 years old, that he discovered the truth.
Jamie Foxx

The multi-award-winning multi-hyphenate Foxx is best known for his portrayal of Ray Charles and collaboration with Kanye West, but he’s also an advocate for adoption.

The star was adopted at just seven months by his maternal grandparents, following the dissolution of his parents’ relationship.

Faith Hill

The famous country star knew she was adopted at a young age, but, as a child in small-town Mississippi, didn’t have the interest to track down her birth parents.

It wasn’t until the singer moved to Nashville, on the path to stardom, that she decided to begin her search, finding not only her parents, but also a biological brother.

Meeting her birth mother was a profound experience for Hill, leaving her not with anger but with respect, she told Good Housekeeping.

"I know she must have had a lot of love for me to want to give me what she felt was a better chance."

Born Tracy Lauren Marrow, the rapper and star of Law and Order: SVU was adopted after tragedy hit his family at a young age. His mother died after having a heart attack when he was eight years old. Four years later, his father also died from a heart attack, leaving the 12-year-old in the hands of his aunts.
