Grammys 2023: Beyoncé wins two awards and Viola Davis receives EGOT status for her victory

Adele upset Beyoncé for album of the year at the Grammys five years ago. Sunday night, will there be two lightning strikes?

Going into the 65th Grammy Awards, the Beyhive and Adele fans have opposing teams they want to win. Beyoncé leads the pack with nine nominations, and with four wins, she will surpass all other Grammy winners ever. She competes against not only Adele but also Harry Styles, Lizzo, Bad Bunny, and – in a throwback performance – ABBA for the night’s top prize.

Pay attention to the Premiere Ceremony pre-show at 3:30 p.m. EST/12:30 p.m. PST and the main event at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST for all the winners and highlights.

Each Brandi Carlile and Kendrick Lamar receives two awards

The best rap song and rap performance go to Kendrick Lamar’s “The Heart Part 5” while the best rock song and rock performance go to Brandi Carlile’s “Broken Horses.” Tony Iommi’s “Degradation Rules” performance alongside rock legend Ozzy Osbourne wins best metal performance, while “Patient Number 9” wins best rock album.

Officially becoming an EGOT winner is Viola Davis, as Beyoncé receives a second Grammy

With her first Grammy Award for the best audiobook, narration, and storytelling recording for “Finding Me,” the actress creates history. “To honor the 6-year-old Viola, her life, her joy, and her trauma, I wrote this book. It’s been quite the adventure. JUST got it! “Adding to her Tony, Emmy, and Oscar victories, Davis says. Then, for her rendition of “Plastic Off the Sofa,” Beyoncé won the best traditional R&B performance.

Michael Buble and the orchestral rendition of Christine McVie’s “Songbird” win Grammy awards

When Vince Mendoza wins for best arrangement, instrumental, and vocals, he pays homage to the late Christine McVie. Mendoza adds, “I owe a lot of gratitude for so many of her great stories and memories. I was 16 when the landmark Rumours” album by Fleetwood Mac was released in 1977. “This album and this music have been with me my entire life.” Additionally, “Higher” by Michael Buble wins the award for the best traditional pop album.

Beyoncé wins her first award for best electronic/dance recording

Broadway’s “MJ the Musical” star Myles Frost shows up to give the following batch of awards. Beyoncé wins the Grammy for best dance/electronic recording for “Break My Soul”; Lizzo wins the award for best-remixed recording (non-classical); and Harry Styles’ “Harry’s House” wins the award for the best-engineered album. Stewart Copeland, a former member of The Police, won best immersive audio album for his album “Divine Tides.”

Disney’s “Encanto” wins two Grammy Awards to start the day

The first two Grammys of the day go to Disney’s animated musical “Encanto,” which featured songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, for best score album and best compilation soundtrack album for visual media. The winner of the award for best video game score soundtrack is “Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla.”

The Grammy Awards guest list for this year is impressive

Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, Mary J. Blige, Brandi Carlile, Luke Combs, Lizzo, and the “Unholy” pair of Sam Smith and Kim Petras are among the artists that will perform during the main Grammy Awards presentation.

In terms of presenters, Cardi B, James Corden, Billy Crystal, Viola Davis (who might win an EGOT during the Premiere Ceremony), Olivia Rodrigo, Shania Twain, and Dwayne Johnson will all be prominent figures handing out awards.

Who’s prepared for the red carpet at the Grammys?

The Grammys are typically where performers show off their most intriguing material. Is anyone up for Lady Gaga’s egg entrance? The Recording Academy’s “Live from the Red Carpet” Livestream, which starts at 6 EST/3 PST on live.grammy.com, will feature all of this year’s fashions. Laverne Cox and Bobby Bones will co-host E”Live !’s from the Red Carpet” special, which will begin at the same time. “Live From E!: Countdown to the Grammys” will air beforehand at 4 EST/1 PST.

The 65th Grammy Awards stream

The Premiere Ceremony is for you if you enjoy seeing performers collect awards because it gives out 81 of the 91 Grammys. The early event, hosted by Randy Rainbow and broadcast on the Recording Academy’s YouTube site and live.grammy.com, includes performances by Samara Joy, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and other artists.

The more performance-heavy main program airs live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ after you’ve endured that or just want to see the top Grammys given.

Who will perform at the Grammy Awards?

There are always surprises, so can we still hold out for a Beyoncé or Adele performance? Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, Chris Stapleton, Smokey Robinson, Brandi Carlile, Luke Combs, Lizzo, Sam Smith, and Kim Petras are among the lineup’s star performers.

In this year’s In Memorium segment, Kacey Musgraves plays “Coal Miner’s Daughter” in honor of Loretta Lynn, Sheryl Crow collaborates with Mick Fleetwood and Bonnie Raitt on “Songbird” in honor of Christine McVie, and Maverick City Music performs “Takeoff” in honor of Migos.

Which musicians weren’t nominated for Grammys this year?

Kanye West and Jay-Z could have competed for the title of most-awarded rapper, but his “Donda 2” effort received little attention.

The other big names we anticipated seeing were Carrie Underwood, whose album “Denim & Rhinestones” and single “Ghost Story” were not nominated, and Ed Sheeran, whose fifth album, “Equals,” featured some of his best work, including “The Joker and the Queen,” Demi Lovato, whose album “Holy Fv—” is the most powerful of her career, Nicki Minaj, who complained to the Recording Academy that she wanted her

Who will present at the Grammys?

After seven years as host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” Trevor Noah recently announced his retirement. He will return for a third time. For Noah, who managed a hybrid ceremony in 2021 at the Los Angeles Convention Center and the hastily rescheduled celebration at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Arena last year, it’s the first “regular” Grammys.
