U-Haul truck driver’s “violent rampage” in New York City resulted in at least 1 fatality and 8 injuries

One person was killed and eight people were hurt after a driver of a U-Haul truck drove onto sidewalks and struck cyclists and scooter riders in New York City on Monday, according to authorities.

According to NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell, officers responded to a report of a guy operating a U-Haul truck in the Bay Ridge neighborhood. Before being halted by police near the entrance to a tunnel connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan, the car impacted several people, according to Sewell.

“Violent rampage” was put at an end by the driver’s capture, according to Sewell. She stated, “We have no information that terrorism has been involved in this incident.

About 30 minutes after the vehicle struck the first victim, a 44-year-old man was struck by it and perished after suffering a head injury, according to the police department.

The ages of the nine victims hit by the car ranged from 30 to 66. Each was a man. A police officer was among those hurt.

Weng Sor, 62, a problematic guy with a history of hazardous behavior and time spent in prison, was eventually recognized as the driver by his son. The Associated Press was informed by Sor’s son, Stephen Sor, 30, that his father had a history of mental illness and had recently resided in Las Vegas, where records indicate he had been convicted and sentenced for several violent crimes, including stabbing his brother.

Stephen Sor revealed in an interview conducted outside of his Brooklyn home that Stephen Sor frequently decides to forego taking his prescriptions and carry out actions like this. He’s been arrested before, so this isn’t the first time. He has served time in prison before.

The devastation upended the late-morning routine and immediately brought to mind other car attacks on bicyclists and pedestrians in the densely populated city, such as the deadly 2017 attack by a terrorist that claimed the lives of eight people on a Manhattan bike path and the 2017 Times Square carnage that claimed the lives of one person and injured 20 others.

According to authorities, the truck struck the first person at 10:17 a.m. as it traveled through a congested area of Brooklyn, just north of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York Harbor. Other reports came in after that.

The area served as the backdrop for “Saturday Night Fever” and portions of the television series “Blue Bloods,” which features immigrants from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. It serves as the location for a New York City Marathon leg each fall.

NYC U-Haul driver’s family reveals the history of violence, mental illness, and killing 8 people

According to his family, the violent and mentally ill U-Haul driver who is accused of killing one person and injuring at least eight others during a rampage in Brooklyn on Monday had a troubled past. He once served time in prison for stabbing his brother.

According to court and prison records, the suspect, 62-year-old Weng Sor, spent nearly 17 months in jail after stabbing his brother in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2015.

He underwent months of psychiatric examination before being sentenced to over a year in the county jail in 2020 for stabbing a guy during a fight.

He has schizophrenia, I say. He’s nuts,” Sor’s brother-in-law Daryl Singer told the associated press.

“I always predicted that he would probably commit suicide at some point. He simply lacks the skills necessary to live a normal life.

Singer demanded that he be imprisoned for life, claiming that his problematic kin was known to “make threats.”

None of this surprises me, Singer remarked. “He should spend the rest of his life in a facility… apart from everyone, chained to the bed.

“Because he may panic. He could end up killing someone.

According to police sources, Sor, who is thought to be homeless, allegedly lost control of the van he was living out of on Monday morning in Bay Ridge and ran over pedestrians and bicycles.

At least eight individuals were hurt during the hysterical 30-minute rampage, including an NYPD officer.

“Fire me! The reports claim that when police attempted to pull over the insane driver after he had left a trail of victims in his wake, he said, “I’m not stopping!”

Sor reportedly told the authorities he “wanted to die” after being brought into the prison.

Outside of his Brooklyn home, his 30-year-old son Stephen Sor told the Associated Press, “Very regularly he’ll choose to skip out on his pills and do something like this.”

He’s been arrested before, so this isn’t the first time. He has visited the jail before, according to the son.

He claimed that his father had been residing in Las Vegas for some time and that their relationship had been “rocky.” He added that he was astonished when his father unexpectedly arrived in Brooklyn one night a week ago.

Singer claimed that Sor spent several years residing in Las Vegas with his mother and other relatives before packing up his belongings and abruptly relocating to Florida a few months ago.

“The mother gives him everything she can since she is all he has,” she said. Singer told the associated press, “She’s done so much for him, rented a room for him and he fouled that up, getting kicked out of three different places he’s lived.

He used to work, but one day he made the decision to buy a bus ticket and travel to Florida, according to Singer. “And that was the last I heard of him from anyone to my knowledge. Nobody in the family ever brings up anything he has done.

He remarked of the family, “They’re afraid of him. “He just got hit in the head. I have no idea why. The rest of the family members are all typical. The only one who isn’t is him.

The weird conduct of Sor stretches back years, according to Singer, who also resides in Las Vegas.

When he first moved in, “we went out to supper, and everything appeared normal at first,” he recounted. He simply doesn’t take his medication for his issue, and he also starts saying strange things like, “Church, God, Satan, and everyone’s going to die pretty soon.”

“His mother is yelling at him to stop, but he simply blathers on.”

Crime scene investigators are currently looking at seven separate sites where Sor is believed to have hurt the victims, said NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell during a press briefing.

The insane four-wheel attacks motivation has not been disclosed by the police.

We currently know very little about the suspect, according to Sewell. That is covered by our investigation.
